Gateway Christian School
One of the highlights of the term was our Book Character Day, where learners dressed as their favourite literary characters and shared stories with one another. Librarians from the Bessie Head Library visited the school, reading to learners and encouraging them to develop a lifelong love of reading. For many of our children, access to books outside of school is limited, making opportunities such as these especially valuable in creating excitement around literacy and encouraging learners to make use of community resources such as local libraries.
Our Grade R learners were also invited to visit the Bessie Head Library as part of the celebrations for World Play Day. The visit provided a wonderful opportunity for our youngest learners to engage with books, storytelling and play-based learning in a new environment, fostering curiosity, creativity and imagination. Through these experiences, learners were introduced to the joy of reading and learning beyond the classroom, helping to lay strong foundations for literacy development and a lifelong love of learning. We believe that nurturing strong reading habits from an early age will have a lasting impact on educational outcomes for years to come.
Building Community Through Shared Experiences
This term, all learners from Grade RR to Grade 7 participated in an excursion to Mountain View. For many children, opportunities to experience recreational outings are rare due to financial constraints faced by their families.
The excursion provided more than just a day of enjoyment. It strengthened friendships, developed confidence, encouraged teamwork, and created positive memories that many learners will cherish for years to come.
Strengthening Families
At Gateway Christian School, we recognise that education is most effective when schools and families work together.
Throughout the term, we hosted special events celebrating Mothers, Fathers and Grandparents. These occasions brought families onto our campus and created meaningful opportunities for children and their caregivers to spend quality time together.
Many parents shared how much they valued these opportunities to participate in their children's school experience. These events help strengthen family bonds and reinforce the importance of parental involvement in a child's development.
The importance of family involvement was particularly evident during our family celebration events this term. One especially moving moment occurred during our Mother's Day celebration when a learner asked her father to attend in place of her mother, who had passed away. She explained to him that he was both her mother and father, and wanted him to share in the special day. Despite the occasion being intended for mothers, he attended simply to show his daughter his love and support. Moments like these remind us how important these family-centred events are for our learners. They provide opportunities to strengthen relationships, affirm children who may be facing difficult circumstances, and create meaningful memories that demonstrate care, belonging, and support.
Partnering with Parents
During our annual Parent Week, educators met individually with parents and guardians to discuss learner progress and development.
These conversations are invaluable in helping us identify strengths, address challenges, and work collaboratively to support each child. Strong partnerships between home and school continue to play a vital role in the success and well-being of our learners.
Celebrating Talent and Confidence
This term also saw the introduction of our first-ever Winter Concerts, held over two evenings.
Learners invested significant time and effort preparing for their performances. For many children, standing on a stage in front of an audience requires tremendous courage and confidence. The concerts provided opportunities for learners to develop self-esteem, creativity, teamwork and public presentation skills.
The overwhelming support from parents and guardians contributed greatly to the success of these evenings and demonstrated the strong sense of community that exists within our school.
Developing Through Sport
Sport continues to play a vital role in the holistic development of our learners.
During Term 2, our learners participated in numerous soccer and netball tournaments and leagues, achieving excellent results against neighbouring schools. Particularly encouraging was the performance of our Under 11 boys, who progressed to the quarter-finals of the Cumberwood Cup, and our Under 13 teams, who finished third in their respective groups.
We also expanded our extra-curricular programme through the introduction of volleyball and chess, providing additional opportunities for learners to discover and develop their talents.
Swimming lessons continued for our Foundation Phase learners, equipping children with important life skills while promoting health, confidence and physical development.
Through sport, our learners learn perseverance, teamwork, discipline, resilience and good sportsmanship—qualities that will serve them well throughout their lives.
